Diesel Crank but NO Start in Winter - Model 784

Shame on me, I didn"t put a winter blend of fuel nor keep my tank full before winter hit. Last night when plowing the slush in the driveway, the engine started to loose power and as it was the end of the plow job, I just put the tractor in the garage. Well, now it cranks but will NOT start. The filters, even after a good warming inside the garage, will NOT flow fuel with consistency; sorta dribbles out. Other than replace the fuel filters on my Model 784,check the fuel flow to the filters, what else should I or may I have to do?

Mitch, is your garage above freezing?
Last winter, my brother had a chunk of ice form in the bottom of the fuel tank restricting the flow to the outlet valve of the fuel tank. That was on his 3230 which has same fuel tank as 784.
With a clean bucket to catch the fuel, take the fuel line from the tank off at the inlet to the primary fuel filter. If the fuel does not flow at the rate of the full of the pipe then there is a problem coming from the fuel tank. Try removing filler cap just incase fuel tank breather hole was frozen over.

Sorry, John, I called you Mitch. These old eyes playing tricks on me.
BTW how cold was it? Usually if the tractor starts and runs for a while the warm fuel going back the return line is enough to keep the fuel from jellying. But going from a warm garage to cold outside will cause ice to form.

JimB2 - it was above freezing when I plowed but it turned quite cold here last night (about 20 deg F,-6 deg C.). There probably is some water in the fuel - was hoping heating the tractor in the garage would get rid of ice. Will check for water tomorrow after checking flow from the tank and add the 911 stuff.

John: Use pure Methyl Hydrate, much more economical, and it is the thawing ingrediant in all those additives. In a weeks time the methyl htdrate will all have evaporated from your tank, regardless of the source.

most treatment will not fix the problem unless the fuel gets about 35 degrees, diesel should not gel at 20.
if you think you might have water in it you need something such as howes and it may sound funny but if you wrap diapers around the filter it will help a bunch too.
