Correct Front Wheels on Farmall 340

Getting ready to paint and restore Farmall 340 and want to know if front wheels are steel 6 bolt rims or open 3 bolt cast. The one I am going to do has a wide front with I think maybe Super C on it with tie rods out front. Just doesn't look or stand quite right in my eyes. The other one I have has the steel 6 bolt wheels. My original sales brochure doesn't show any side views so can't tell. Any help here?? Thanks

Migraine: Back when 40-60 tractors were new. I was quite involved farming with my dad as a young man. We used to shop at two separate IH dealers. I never saw a 40-60 series tractor with cast 3 spoke wheels. Now, that is not saying it didn't happen, however I never saw it among new tractors on the lot or literature in the show room.

Tyrods out front is correct for a 340 and that front end only marginally heavier than a SC or 240. Bear in mind, my 130 cast spoke wheels will mount on 140 axles. I suspect 230 cast spoke wheels will fit 240 or 340 front axles.

Yup, tierods out front continued through the 504. Probably the same front end as the Super C, maybe marginally heaver as Hugh says.

Heck Hugh, the 130 cast wheels will probably even fit a 200, 230, or 240 not to mention Super A, Super C, 100. And, vice versa.

mkirsch: Not sure how I remember this, but I think SC, 230, etc. axles sizes are larger. My brother Frank has a 230, I can't remember the details, but something didn't fit. I'm thinking he may have got some wheel bearings from me. At one time I had some extras. All I can think of at the moment.

You would change your statement if you would see the shop manual. My friend hasnt made a decision what rims he wants to use as the ones on the wide front arent in the book. The holes for front wts arent correct.

Why the different sizes were offered you would have to talk to the engineer who convinced them to have them offered. Friend in TEXAS has a couple of 340s with different rims. There are 6 sizes listed for the 240 series.
