Gasket questions

I've searched the board, and now I'm even more confused about gaskets and sealant. As I put my H back together I'm not sure what to seal, and not. Valve cover gasket - I've never put anything here but cork gasket. Oil Pan Gasket - seems the general agreement is red or blue rtv on the pan side of the cork gasket - correct? as for the sideplate gaskets - I have no clue. What about the thermostat and related wather pump gaskets? I was planning on making those - or should I just use blue rtv?

blue RTV is over used. Put hiTack spray on the VC gasket (only on the side that touches sheet metal) leave the other side dry amd put a thin film of grease on the head to gasket surface.
Same for the oil pan, Use non hardening #2 permatex on both sides of the side cover gasket, (a thin skim is all that is needed, but on the entire surface)
Same for Tstat housing. (by the way choose one person to listen to and do it) JimN

I always use gaskets. I always use RTV. The secret is in the technique.

The surfaces to be mated must be surgically clean with no trace of oil. This means a white paper towel wetted with brake cleaner must come back clean.

The grease on your fingertip applied to "spreading" the RTV can cause a screwup. Wear nitrile gloves.

Once you have achieved this, you will not leak any more oil....thru your new gaskets.

Blue RTV is fine in some applications if used sparingly but people get carried away with it. I purchased a farmall M from the neighbor who used it like crazy, well it worked allright sealed up transmission input shaft lube holes. number 2 permatex is very good product also. Some gaskets better off without any. Scott
