Re: axel shaft H

hi, i got the axel out using a hydraulic separator ( V jaws) and placing it between the two shafts. It popped out but needed force. Thanks for the help now I need to line up the bull gear and put it back together

Jim,
You seem knowledgable on Farmall H bull gear removal. I need help. THe bearing behind the break seal is out leaking on the brake band. While fixing I noticed the bearing was shot just behind it - the bull pinion bearing? So I took the rear wheel off and put a block between the left and right bull gear bolts so when I loosen it it also slides (forces) it off the axel. Well it slid off about 1/4 so far and now I can feel pressure building on my wrench and the axel isnt moving out of the gear. I can apply more pressure but I wonder if there is something I need to consider before turing harder? Thanks
Kelly

Did you take the outer axle seal retainer off the axle housing?

you will need to take the top cover off trans case and remove axle and bull gear. If not the housing you are trying to get off will break like mine did. BIG JOB

Yes, you will need to take the 4 bolts out of the seal retainer. There is a shoulder on the axle shaft that is pushing the outer bearing out. Make sure the bull gear is supported before the axle shaft is pressed all the way through it. A tooth could get chipped if it falls in the case.

you don't have to take the top off the rearend. The bolt on the bull gear and the gear itself can be removed from the axel through the pto hole in the back of the rearend housing.Granted it is easier to do the job from the top.
