Slot deck on M Farmall

Any Idea why there is a large slot in the deck? Why are these more valueable than any other one? I just got a 39 (by casting number-early 40 by serial number) today and wondered about the difference. Thanks

39 and early production 40s were using a deck that located the seat support. Later IH made the location into the hold down bracket beacuse (probabluy) it was less expensive, and easier to mold in the foundry. araly is relitive, but interesting at any rate. If the casting #s are uniform, the tractor is an early 40 model. JimN

The tractor MAY be more valuable simply because it IS an early one. The slot top deck helps to identify the tractor as an early one, but the slot top deck itself is NOT more valuable because it would be totally in-correct on any tractor other than a '39 or very early '40.

Slot was to give space for matching seat assembly to move up and down as seat frame spring compressed or rebounded. Some pullers made a demand for tops in the past because they were a little lighter than later ones. Most serious pullers have went to other types now. Most demand and price is from restorers wanting original seat, seat frames and attaching parts for the early tractors because a lot were changed or modified.

How soon in '40 did they start the flat deck? I had a '40 where the castings were cast in mid march, and the deck was flat. Just curious. I had originally thought the slot was only in 1939 until I saw an H with a slot along the road, and then saw that it was an early '40

There is a very long list of diferences on these early M's and H's I have been reserching these for a few years and if you have any questions I might be able to answer them. I both a 39 H and M. Paul
