Farmall 460 Brake Question

I need to know what the small spring inside the brake cover / drum attaches to and what is the purpose. It attaches to a small screw that comes in from the outside of the drum cover. Anyone out there know? Also how can I test the glow plugs on the 460 diesel without takeing them out?

John:There are springs from the top of each drum, going to each of the brake pedals on right and to clutch pedal on left. I not quite sure I'm understanding you correctly.

On the glow plugs, if you know batteries are close 100% the glow plug meter at dash will go to extreme right if all are working. For each sixth meter drops back you know one is not working. To test individual glow plugs pull wire at plug and hook a test light between wire and plug. If it lights you know that one works. Glow plug button has to be engaged during test.

Thanks for the advice on the glow plugs. As for the brake durm - there is a small screw / bolt thats goes from the outside in. Inside there is a small hole in the end of the screw / bolt and the small spring ataches there. What does the other end of the spring go to?

It's been a long time since I had one apart that still had that spring but I think the other end of the spring attaches to the loop in the cotter pin.

You can check the glow plugs one at a time with the glow plug meter but attaching one wire at a time to the plugs and watching the meter. They usually go up about 1/4 to 1/3 on the meter if they are good.

As Owen said in the cotter pin loop of brake yoke pin. Supposed to help with chattering or brake drag, some early tractors didn"t have them.

Owen: Both my 656 and 560 dash meters read to the extreme right, unless batteries were down or a glow plug not working.

When I worked for a IH Dealer, the disc brake system had a tendency to lock up and factory reps told us to drill a small hole in the brake drum, insert a small picker pin and spring ,atach spring to the head of the cotter pin, suppose to help pull the brake off from sticking on. Did no always work, but helped some.

(quoted from post at 03:35:51 12/08/08) Owen: Both my 656 and 560 dash meters read to the extreme right, unless batteries were down or a glow plug not working.

That is normal, but I was talking about having only one glow plug active at a time, the other five glow plugs disconnected. In that case it has been my experience that the meter will move about 1/4 to 1/3 with a good glow plug. Just continue to swap in one glow plug at a time to test them all.

Owen: My appologies, I misunderstood you. Yes, I remember doing as you suggest. The test light works also, maybe not very accurate.
