I am looking at purchasing a 1256 with a cracked block it comes with redone head good block with pistons. My question is do I go with new S&P and a ballpark cost to have motor reassembled or should I wait and find one running? Thanks for any help. The tractor is open station straight faded avg. tires and would be around 5K

I have been rebuilding engines all my life. I would tear down both blocks and put one together using the best of both. Also new parts as needed. Then you will know what you have. A used engine is always chancy.

I would have to agree with Ted. You have the most of the parts to build a good engine. Why spend more money on an engine that you don't know the history of unless it comes with paperwork that you can verify its recent repair history. Better to rebuild with the parts you have buying new parts as needed. Sounds like you already have a rebuilt head? Make that and your extra block(after having a maachine shop clean it and inspect for cracks) the start of your new engine. Cheaper in the long run. Also take pictures and keep invoices of new parts and outside labor so you can prove condition of engine should in the future you want to sell or trade. Armand

It sounds like you have enough parts to put together a good engine with a few new parts. I think it sounds a little pricey for a tractor with a bad motor. If you decide to buy the tractor you need to enlist the help of a mechanic that is familiar with the DT407 and rebuilt a lot of them. This is an engine that has to be done just right. If you don't know what you are doing you could be building as The Tractor Vet says "a grenade waiting to explode". Good luck.
