So Far....Drug the A out of a pine thicket for the old Man, Engine stuck....Kroil...ATF, 3 weeks later engine frees up....No fire....worked Magneto over....Bad carb. ..pulled a carb off My 240, engine started, I ran it a few minutes ,shut it down. Today I filled the radiator with water/antifreeze, cranked it up and let it run an hour, runs pretty good considerin' the last valve closest to the gas tank is stuck open (cyl.#4 I think it is the exhaust valve) I've been sprayin Kroil and pourin' ATF on this valve stem, any ideas on freein' this valve without pullin' the head? I've thought about takin' a brass drift, placein' it on the valve and hittin' it easy with a lead hammer.....Any other things Yaw'll have tried before?
Thanks

Tapping the stem is fine. Do not get carried away it could bend. If it begins to go further in, pry it uo with two screw drivers while doing more tapping, be patient. JimN

Hey, Ya"ll! I"ve always had pretty decent luck tapping on the valve surface.
I always felt that it worked better with less chance of bending the stem, if I used a plastic or hard rubber mallet directly on the valve surface.
As was stated, once it begins to move a hair get it back up and then tap it down again. PATIENCE is key to this method working.
Of course, it"s always a pretty good bet that the valve guide is gonna be scarred up and she"ll be smoking even when you get it freed up.

I agree if the head is off of the block this is certainly a good policy, However this engine is still together, and it is tough finding tiny people with hammers. :) JimN

If you take the rockers off, you should be able to get a small vise grips on the top of the stem. Try turning it back and forth with lots of pb blaster. Let it soak a few days and keep trying.

Do as advised above. Pull the spark plug and pry the valve back up with a small bar ounce it starts moving down. Good luck and have fun!
