Clunking noise from trans?

I've got a 1940's Farmall C w/ a loader. I am in Maine & it's 20* this morning. I just went to use the tractor & there is an audible CLUNKING noise coming from transmission. It started as soon as I put the tractor into gear. It makes the noise fwd & reverse & you can "feel" the clunk??? This tractor has never given me any trouble.....where do I start troubleshooting??

It was 14 F here in NE MD this morning. You may have ice in your gear box if water has entered and froze. Hal

I was thinking along those lines too....Now, what do I do about it?? I've never checked or added oil to the trans. It looks like the fill plug is near my left foot? But, here's the deal, that plug is all mashed over...if I melt & drain the old stuff, can I add new fluid through the PTO? or is that not smart??

O.k...update: I got the filler plug out w/ a torch & a set of channel locks. I drained the trans fluid. I got about 5 gallons of what looks like old mustard & after an hour w/ a heat gun pointed into the filler, I got another 3 or 4 gallons of water. (I have 2 5 gallon buckets almost full). Now, I'm in Maine, this tractor does not ever get covered, it hauls logs & gets used constantly, what type of oil should I put back in (80-90?) & How much, I'm pretty sure the 9 gallons is too much. And, I'm putting teflon tape on my filler plug threads, but, what is the likely source of that much water finding it's way in there?? Do I need to put a 5 gallon bucket over the shifter?? Thanks

My manual calls for 19 quarts which is almost 5 gallons. It would be better if you had a shed to keep it under. I would cover that part of the tractor with a tarp. I would cover the distributor or mag with something waterproof too. Heavy blowing rain can get in there too or snow when it melts.

Can you put up a lean-to of any kind---just to keep the weather off of the tractor? Something off of a shed or the house? Water or condensation will find its way into any tractor rear-end. If you can't get the unit under cover, when freezing weather is coming along, pull the drain plug out to the last thread & let the water out. It will be on the bottom of the transmission case & will drain out easily. You are lucky that the transmission wasn't totally locked up with the ice.
