Hello I have a pair of smta tractors that I have been workign on fixing up. The one that I want to work on now has a bad ta, slips on the low side. My question is do I replace the whole unit or can I get parts to rebuild it myself. I see heavy duty sprag type ta's advertised, are they worth the extra $? Plan to use the tractor to bale some hay and possibly plow with it. Also I see several posts indicating that the tractor should have HYtran in the rearend, not 80-90wt, my owners manual specifies gear oil, what are other people using? Thanks, MikeS.

I'm also interested in the replies. I've seen the online spare parts listing from Case-IH for the TA, and OEM parts are presumably available but wondered if "improved engineering" parts were available too.

I've not even transported my SMTA here yet to fully check its condition although I know it runs and drives.

HyTran in the rear end if you don't have the optional T&A. You may find if you get that sludge out of the rear end, your TA may not slip anymore.

Have you checked the external adjustments for the Clutches? If not give it a try. It probably won't help, but always try the simple things first.
If after clutch adjustment, if it still slips then it indicates the sprag clutch is probably bad. This is a set of rollers that form a one-way clutch. At this point you may want to tear it down to determine the extent of the damage. If the roller ramps are damaged, I would suggest installing a professionally rebuilt assembly.
As far as TA operataion, if you are not aware, the TA is not designed to provide extra operational ground speeds. It's designed for intermittant use. In other words don't plow all day in TA mode. Just use it to get through the tough spots. For baying hay, use the TA only when the baler loads up in a tough spot. The purpose of the TA is to prevent the need to stop and change gears while incountering temporary heavy loads. J. I. Case had Case-O-Matic for the same purpose.
I would use HyTran or equivelent.

I worded that wrong. If you have the TA, use HyTrans. If you don't have TA, then you can use the regular gear oil.

Dear K-MO I differ on your opinion on the use of a TA. It can be run all day every day for years in TA (reduction) with no ill effects. There are no warnings on the use except to avoid coasting down hill faster than that gear with TA back. We have tractors that hafe spent 1/2 of their life in TA and still have the original ramp and rollers. The system is robust when cared for, and shifted fast fron direct to TA, and TA to direct. (swift movement of the Lever)
Kevin Meier on this sight sells all the parts to repair them, and the ramp/rollers can be replaced seperately. The trans should have Hytran in it. I agree with all your other assertions. TAs are tough. JimN

I always put the sprag kit in for anything I want to keep. I have never replaced one yet that went bad(knock on wood) and I have rebuilt 100's. Even several in 150+hp 560 pullers with turbos. Seems you pay for what you get, also put in a new ta disk and at least a reman pp, it isnt that much more and be totally done with it. Good luck.

I have rebuild ramps with .010 oversized rollers and I also have the sprag kits. The heavy duty sprag kit has 4 times the holding power of the 8 rollers. It just depends on your preference and use of the tractor. Feel free to email me anytime with more questions.
