Installing Heisler road gear on F14

I'm getting ready to put the road gear on my F14. I pulled the input shaft out of the front of the trans and compared the gears on it to the gears on the road gear.

Rut-ro, Rastro...

There are two gears involved here: The bevel gear that meshes with the transmission mainshaft, and right behind that a spur gear that runs the PTO shaft. On the road gear, both are about a half-inch larger in diameter with a different tooth count.

Fortunately, the feller I got the road gear from knows more about the situation than I do and sent the transmission mainshaft along with the road gear, so I've got that covered.

It's been several years since I had the transmission cover off . My question is, can I unbolt the bearing carrier on the rear of the PTO, pull the shaft partway out and slide the gear off the other end to change it, or am I going to have to pull the entire PTO shaft out?

If I have to pull the whole shaft, how much of the trans do I have to take apart to get to it?

Thanks for any insights.

Paul, I'll have to do some checking. I know I took pictures of my F14 step by step when I rebuilt it. I may have lost them when my old computer took a lightening hit last year, but I should have them backed up. Finding them may take a while. I'll see what I can do.

Gottem. Thanks. Looks like it'll work like I thought. Pull the mainshaft which has to be changed anyway, then pull the PTO shaft out of the gear and shifter and pull the gear up through the top of the tranny and swap it out.

Yer prolly right about the extra set of hands. You busy this weekend? ";^)

The transmission for a f-14 is different from a f-12. The f-14 runs at a higher RPM so the input gears on the trans had to be changed to adjust for the increased RPM's. The best bet is to take the top cover off, drain the oil, and then pull the PTO out from the rear cover. It's a job to do; but when done it is fun to have. Good Luck.

what you have is an overdirve for an F-12. 14's ran higher RPM's, so they had to be geared down a touch so the actual ground speed would match that of an F-12. About the only way you will get it to work is change the mainshaft and the PTO........................HAVE FUN
