carb cleaner

What carb cleaner do you folks recommend for my Cub and Farmall C? It is almost time to take them apart and clean them. Will kerosene work?

I have never found carb-cleaner to be any more effective than anything else that may be used. I use Brake-clean in an aerosol can, It works well , and evaporates quickly. In my opinion the best way to clean a carb is to disassemble it as far as you can and clean all parts throughly with brake clean , And then blow everthing out with compressed air. And reassemble.

Go to an autoparts store and buy a gallon of carb cleaner, and soak the whole thing after disassembly at least overnight. The cans usually have a lift out basket for the small parts. Don't throw it away as it can be reused.

I use a carb cleaner additative that you but in the small containers (250ml?). I disassemble the carb and put them into a container over night or even for a couple of hours. I top up the container with gas. After the soaking I blow out with compressed air. You can do multiple carbs with one solution.

My cheap two cents.

I have always poured some form of fuel injection cleaner in the tank to keep the carb and valves clean. Pour a hole bottle of Gumout or Seafoam into a full tank of fuel every 4 or 5 fill ups and it keeps my cub running great.

Four or five fill ups for me is a years worth of fuel so i'm doing this, this often to keep things from getting varnish built up on them.

If you have ever had a head off a cub you will know how bad carbon builds up around the valves.

Another quick tip ,

Pull the exhaust manifold off the motor and use the gasket to port match the manifold to the block. You will be amazed as to how far off the the ports are from being in aligment. Can't say it ads more power but it runs smoother. I have done this to several cubs with the same results.
I have had the ends ports be off by .375 [3/8"] on a port that isn't quite one inch.

The best carb cleaner that I have found is at the local IH dealer. White spray can, CNH brand. It will remove grunge that auto parts store cleaners will not touch.
