Really hot brake housing on 1256

Recently after about a four mile road trip, I noticed the brake housing on my 1256 was smoking hot. Anyone have any ideas about where to start and what the problem might be. Thanks.

If the tractor has a cab make sure the floor mat is not between the pedal and the edge of the platform. It only takes a small movement of the pedal to lightly put the brake on. The screw in the brake valve spool can also come loose & put the brake on. The brake pedal has to come back solid against the edge of the platform.

Thanks Ted. The tractor is an open station. When this happened the brakes were locked together so I'm I'assuming that if one hung up they both probably would. The tractor had been sitting outside hooked to an auger for several weeks with episodes of rain, snow and temps in the teens so I suppose it is possible something just hung up due to weather conditions. Now I am wondering what if any damage may have been done.

Which housing? Over the summer, my friend's 966 had the right-hand housing got smoking hot. Turned out the differential lock was stuck. Down the straightaway, you didn't notice, but it got hot baling hay all day. Ended up simply taking the disk out and reassembling. We think the problem lies with the actuator valve, but he has yet to fix it. He might miss the differential lock this winter.

You may or may not have it, I think it was an option.

Thanks Chris. It did happen to be the right side housing that got hot. I'm not sure if my tractor has diff. lock or not. How do I tell? Thanks.

It likely doesn't because diff lock wasn't an option until the '66 series.

If it has it, there would be a diff lock button on the deck to the right of the seat.

Sometimes the insulator pad falls off the brake piston and gets wedged in between things and it gets very hot, this happened to my 856. Lee
