operating a log splitter

i am going to try to operate my log splitter off my "H". it dosent have live hydrolics. my thought is to hook up the hydro lines from the pump on the "H" to the splitter and engage the hydro lever on the "H" (keeping it always engaged) and running the splitter. but before i have new lines with quick connects made i would like to know if this will work. any advice will be appreciated, thanks.

it can be done. however run 1 hose from hyd. outlet to in side of open center 2 way valve and a return to pump fill pipe on pump, pressure outlet lines on valve go to 2 way splitter cylinder. note this will not have a lot of splitting power as an H hyd pressue is in the area of 700 psi and most splitters use 2000 to 2500 psi pumps

I am planning to do the same. I am looking for a 3 pt splitter, and I plan on getting a pto hydraulic pump and reservior. I think the H pump is not really designed for this type of use. A pto unit would work great.

I think you should look at pump displacement per revolution usually in cu.in./rev before you buy a PTO pump. In other words, buy one according to that feature.

This will determine the cycle time of your splitter when you compute the displacement of the hydraulic cylinder...and note the cylinder will have slightly different volumes on each side of the piston...on one side the rod will occupy some of the volume.

So you use cu.in/rev x PTO rpms to get a cu-in/min figure. You have a certain number of cu-inches of the cylinder to fill, and so you can get the number of minutes needed to cycle the cylinder in one direction.
