which wire goes where on the regulator in the alternator, plug will slide in both ways. There is a large wire about 14 guage with battery voltage to it always and a lighter wire about 18 guage with no power. alternator is heating up and killing the battery.

Is this the type of alternator you have... Delco 10SI/12SI?

If so, the #2 (RH in the photo) terminal is "voltage sense", and will have battery voltage at all times.

The #1 (LH) terminal is "switched excite", and will only have power when the key switch is "ON".

Instead of the diode shown in the photo, your tractor will have a resistor that accomplishes the same thing... to limit the reverse flow of current out of the alternator through the "excite" terminal. Also, the #2 wire will likely NOT be connected to the output stud, but will be connected to a point nearer to the battery for BETTER voltage sensing (although the setup shown will work just fine, and is often used in alternator conversions.

To recap... #2 always "hot", #1 only "hot" when key switch is "ON".

that is the alternator and that is how it is wired, strange though why it heats up and kills the battery

voltage regulator was just replaced under warranty as it quit charging, even before alternator was repaired the second time it killed batteries

You don't by chance have two 6V batteries wired in parallel do you?

6 volt batteries need to be wired in series and the 12 volt type need to be in parallel.

Bob is correct, the heat is a bad diode. If under warranty, get them to make it right. If not just buy a diode kit. JimN

Just reading the post, & you said there are 2 12-volt batteries?? How are they connected? If they are wired in parallel, you are O.K. If they are in series, you're getting 24-volts.
