Looked at a one owner 656 gas that has been well taken care of. There is a loud whining noise that gets louder when you rev it up and seems to be associated with the power steering as well. Hydraulic oil is clean and full and dealer says that noise is not really unusual for these tractors. Everything seems to work ok though. Other thing is the tractor runs fine and does not smoke any, but there is oil coming out of the exhaust manifold on the back cylinder so there is apparently oil coming up past the rings. The tractor has been sitting a while so could the rings just maybe be stuck on that cylinder? I am new to IH so I would appreciate any comments on this or 656 tractors in general. Thanks Scott

Sounds like a hydraulic pump related issue. I bought a 966 a few years back that had the wrong pump gear installed and was a 3 degree difference in gear pitch. You could not stand to listen to that noise. Could be also cavitating noise from low fluid or partially plugged hyd filter. If the steering ,TA or brakes seem slow or not always functioning correctly you could have main hydraulic pump issues just around the corner. The oil probably is from stuck rings and may come out of that with a good hard workout. A half hour on the dyno or disk can do wonders for these old girls. Migraine

Sounds like the power steering isn't going back to center all the way. On the one we had it would quit after it was used for awhile. Sometimes it worked to turn steering all the way both ways as far asit would go a few times. Cleans all the air out of the unit. Just my 2 cts.

There is a hose in the rear that is a suction hose that will kink and or get a pin hole in that will cause this also, really sucks to change, but if you over fill the hydraulic oil in the rear end by 5 gallon it will go over the hose and normally quite, have had to do that to several 656s and 544s, good luck

my 656 also made that noise it was the screen that is over the hyd. filter clean the screen good and put in a new filter and the noise stopped it was really bad in the winter the condensation would form ice on the screen.

Went through that with my 2606 which has the same hydraulics. Clean the screen with brakleen and change the filter. Keep it 5 gal over full. You can get a wix filter next day from Oreillys if necessary unless they happen to have it in stock.

It is near impossible to change the hytran and get all water out of the oil. Later you will just get more. Unless you are getting down to zero where the hytran is really icing up, the cold fluid thickens this time of year in cold weather and then has trouble flowing through the dirty screen.

It is hard to get clean fluid after a change cause the draft control housing under the seat also holds a few gallons and probably has a layer of sludge in the bottom of it. Wouldn't hurt to clean it out sometime though. Then all your lines and cylinders still have the old fluid which is hard and expensive to chase out.

Reread your post and realized this isn't your tractor. I'm not sure whining is normal although mine does some cause of the screen, etc. Could be headed towards a bad power steering pump. Drive it and check the steering. Yours would have 2 pumps identified by 2 lines coming off of the left side of the transmission housing. One for power steering and one for draft control.

Don't know what to say about the oil on the exhaust manifold. Mine seems to have a place or two there by the exhaust manifold bolts (rear may be right if I remember correctly) where there is some type of fresh oil seep. I've run it for hours moving hay with no problems. However mine also has alot of blowby(oil smoke coming out of the blowby tube under pressure) but I still use it and it doesn't use oil (maybe 1/4 qt in 3 hours) like a couple old cars I had years ago. I have to keep the oil filler cap screwed on tight or it will blow oil out. It does not have any blue oil smoke coming out the exhaust though. I've never run a compression check on mine. You should have the dealer do that while you watch. I suppose you want 125 psi per cylinder or so.

Maybe someone here can identify this problem but I wouldn't expect your problem to go away. You need to run that tractor around the dealers yard for an hour or two or take it home on a trial run. Does he sell used cars too? Not sure I'd trust a dealer (cars or tractors) who says the noise they make is normal. Like a car dealer told me after I started up a fuel injected car that was running rough, he said it was because it hasn't been started in a week on the lot. I told him yeah right and left.

You haven't said what you want to use it for and how bad you need and have you checked the pto, draft control, TA clutches, tranny & clutch or hydro, etc. Talk to the old owner. Sounds like you have enough issues to negotiate with though.

let us know what you find out and do. It's nice and helpful when giving advice to get some feedback on the advice.
