water in cylinder

Just started restoring an old M which had set for ten year outdoors. Pulled head, one of the cylinders has water. Questions; is the head cracked and therefore runied? What next if it is salvageble?

Not necessarily a cracked head. Could be water got in through an uncovered exhaust pipe. I would guess the engine is stuck. You are going to need to get water out of the cylinders then see if you can un stick it. Depending upon the damage I would just pull the pistons and sleeves and see if you can clean them up. You probably will want to get head checked for cracks.

I put the shopvac on the wet cylinder, poured Marvel Mystery/Diesel mix in and am letting it sit.

I'll cross my fingers and take the head and have it checked.

Oh yes, the engine is seized.
Thanks for the quick repsonse.

The sleeves in that engine are dry (pressed into the cast iron of the block full length contact. Rarely do they come out easily with the piston in the cylinder, as the piston ring rust has swelled the ring and sleeve so that they are tight. Some crack the sleeve, and cast bore as well. Getting the piston out can (in extreme water corrosion) require it to be removed in pieces. Drilling out the top just inside the rings with a circle of holes, and cutting down beside the pin with a recipro saw or similar. Good luck, JimN
