Farmall B Hood Year

I have a B but I don't know what year it is. The rear of the tractor has been switched out a few years ago with one from a 1946 B. But I don't know what year the front of the tractor is from the transmission forward. It has a hood and grill that is installed with screws that you give a half turn on them not hook clips like my Farmall M has and other A's & B's that I have seen. What years did they use these hoods? or how can I find out the year of the tractor. Thank You.

39 or 40. Also if the engine is original the engine serial is the same as the original chassis serial. Engine serial is stamped below the #1 spark plug. Beginning serials for each year are listed under Research and Info to your left. Also casting codes in the form of 1*8*J are on most of the major castings, but may be few and far between on an early B. The J means 1940, 1939 is I, etc.

Thank You CNKS. I will have to take a look and see what the numbers on the block are. Do you know will the newer style hoods with the clips work on this old style design? It seems a shame they went away from this style. It seems to work very well.
Thanks again.
Joe.

The hoods are not interchangeable--but you can look at your M to see what would have to be done to make one or the other fit. I will agree that the later hoods are almost impossible to get lined up perfectly.

CNKS steered you right as far as ID for the year on the front of your tractor. Those fasteners are called Dzus fasteners and are pretty common in aircraft applications. Maybe that's why IH went to J-hooks in their place as the US got seriously into WWII, dunno.

I can give a look at my parts book to see what other parts changed when they switched from Dzus's to J-hooks for the hood and bolts for the grille. The critical points would, I think, be the radiator support bracket and the front corners of the fuel tank, which is where they put metal and fashioned things for the J-hooks to hold the hood.

Are you thinkin' you might have to replace the hood or grille? I think OEM is selling the Dzus fasteners so there is a source if you're looking for them.

Actually the fasteners are all ok and in working order, but the sheet metal is rough. If it turns out to be a 39 it may be worth my while to restore the original parts if I can. Of course the rear end will still be a 46. Thanks for all the information.
Joe.

The gas tank and radiator are different and so no interchange. You can get new hoods with the 1/4 turn screws. You can change the gas tank by adding a little piece of angle iron and removing the Dzus brackets but the radiator would not work without a lot of changing. I have changed the gas tank but too many things for the rad.
