diesel 364 trouble starting

I have an IH 364 diesel that I have trouble starting when it sits. First I found the main shaft sael was leaking diesel into my oil so....I replaced it and it ran good. Now when she sits for a few weeks and i glow it and crank it it sounds like its trying to fire but then goes to all cranking. So i reglow it again and hit the starter again and it does it again. Well after 5 or so tries and glowing it finally starts up and runs normal - please help

Can you tell if you get blue oil smoke when you first start it up? It sounds like you may not have quite enough compression on starting and it gets better when the rings get hot. If it were a problem with the injectors, it would not clear up when you get it started. You might want to run a compression test. If the main seal was so worn that you had to replace it, the entire engin may be well worn. In any case, diesels can be a booger to start in cold weather.

As for the engine, it was replaced with a new one prior to me getting it. The old owner told me. It has about 800 hours on it. The pump was not rebuilt. As when it tries to start the smoke is dark gray. but when it runs there is no smoke.

Hi John, do you get white smoke out the exhaust when cranking engine? From your post this appears to have all started after you replaced the front seal on the fuel injection pump. Is this correct? When you removed the injection pump did you scribe a mark on pump and mounting plate so you would not mess up the injection pump timing? Are the glow plugs actually working properly? Does the indicator on the dash turn cherry red?
Also I am wondering if the injection pump is loosing prime? Try hand pumping the lift pump before attempting to start.

Hello John,
sounds like your fuel is bleeding back or you are getting air into the fuel system. I am not sure how the fuel system is set up on a 364. if the tank is lower then the pump and you have a loose line you could get air in the fuel. you could try bleeding it before you start it with the hand primmer pump. or park it on a hill so the fuel level is above the injection pump and see what happens.
Good Luck Ed

The tank is above the pump, but it pumps the fuel over the engine to the injection pump.

As for the pump seal replacement. YES I did scribe a mark and I made sure it was right. It ran good in the summer. The smoke is dark gray when it is trying to start. The glow plug indicator does turn red - both coils. It is a series system so I assume the plugs are ALL glowing.

If it runs once started with no problems, then it should not be a problem with the injector timming. Since you have indicated that the motor has recently been rebuilt there should be plenty of compression. It has to be a problem with the glow plugs either not being run long enough or they simply are not working well. Again, many diesels do not like the cold. Those old units we had back in the 50's and early 60's could be difficult to start if the temperature was below 40 (even when everything else was right with the tractor). These new engins are nothing like what we had then so comparing with a new unit may not be a good idea. Getting it to crank and run was considered success.

yes it runs well when it finally gets started. It is cold here today - 30. I have to pull the glow plugs and check them out. - thanks

By the way it is a 1976 model

Hi John, -30F or 30F just below frezing? We had same BD154 engine in B414,434,384 on our farm in eastern Ontario, Canada and the only way for a good start in cold weather is to install an inline heater in the lower rad hose and winter Diesel fuel.
