Where can I get a tach rebuilt?

The tach on my 404 is completely flaky. The RPM wanders all over, the revolution counter has stopped, etc. I called Bates and they no longer have a source for this work. They told me to check back sometime this winter.

Anyone know a place that can do this properly?

I called around a bit myself on my F504D tach. There are no reproductions made for this tractor. I can use a tach from another model or series, but it will not be correct. Repros have 0-2400 rpm scale, mine has 0-3000 rpm scale... I have Abbott and D&M's info on file. I called D&M earlier this year, I think they estimated around +$200. I found a NOS for my 504 for $325. When you Google the part number they are the ONLY THING FOUND, 1 RECORD! I'd say its rare.

Good luck, when I decide to let loose of some cash I plan to get mine rebuilt or buy new.

The tachometer on my 504 got to acting screwy. I removed it from the dash and then, using a thin flat screwdriver , carefully pried open the chrome ring holding the unit together. Once inside, I lubricated the shafts and gears with some light oil and put it back together by crimping the ring back in place using vise-grip type pliers. It worked perfectly again.

Well if ya look close the axle shaft for the needle broke. I thought it was a cable but the hour meter worked for some time after the needle quit. It might still work, I disconnected the cable to prevent more damage.

Thanks guys!

If I wanted to replace it what I need is a P/N 383088R91 and that comes up nowhere. It's 2400 RPM, 4 gears and from what I can tell doesn't fit anything else. Guess I should have picked a tractor that IH made more of ;) I'd be happy if I could find a NOS part but a rebuild is fine by me.

I thought about taking it apart but I doubt that I could fix it. I wouldn't be able to get the face reconditioned that way either. I sent a couple of emails to the places you guys listed. I'll let everyone know what I decide to do.

I did the same with the tach on my 8N. All the lubricant had turned to tar so that the cable end either rounded off or broke. Since I cleaned out all the tar and re-oiled it it has worked fine. I didn"t need to disassemble it much beyond removing the cover (the hardest part).
