Do any of you guys have a picture of the resistor that is on your tractor? I am having some issues with my H starting and I think a guy sold me the wrong resistor. I bought it at a "non-IH" store and I am now thinking twice about my purchase. Where is the best location to get just the resistor? Any pictures would be appreicated.

Thanks

A quick check of resistor function is to temporarily bypass the resistor by jumpering the two terminals together. If the engine starts/runs OK with the resistor bypassed it means either the resistance is too high or the resistor is open-circuited.

On my Super M I mounted the resistor with a 5/16" bolt thru a conveniently located (and unused...) hole in the gas tank front support bracket. However most of 'em I see are mounted alongsdie the coil using one of the coil clamp bolts.

zip on down to napa and ask for an ignition balllast resistor for an early 1970's b-body chrysler product. its a good guy ceramic resistor, set you back maybe 3 or 4 dollars.

one on left is ignition
one on right is alt

Depends on the alternator and how it's wired up.

For the Delco 10SI (most common alternator used for 12 volt conversions) you need either a resistor, warning lamp or diode in the circuit between the ignition switch and the alternator #1 terminal.

The alternator will work without a resistor, etc. However without it and if the tractor has coil & distributor ignition, the alternator will "back feed" the coil after the ignition is turned off causing the engine to continue to run.

Bob, I know you're the premiere electrical expert on this board, but don't you mean DIODE on the alternator? I've seen lots and lots of diodes, but no resistors on alternators.
