Thanks for the advice I got from those that responded Saturday before last. It was not the coil but a bad connection at the point terminal connection on the distributor. Lots of rust. I had to brush it off and once I did it fired right off. It had been frozen and we had replaced the sleeves and pistons and had done a head rebuild. It also has a rebuilt carburator. The gas tank was rusty inside and had to be sealed. All done. I say it fired right off but it only ran for about 10 seconds. The rebuild goo had not even been burned out of the pistons before it quit. Now I need help. Any thoughts about why it quit. It will run for a second or so if I use starter fluid, then quit. It has gasoline to the carburator. LMack

You are not getting any gas into the engine. You need to hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while someone makes an attempt to start the tractor. If there's very little suction
means there's very low intake manifold vacuum. You need to make sure the intake manifold is tight and the carburetor is too. Check your valves to make sure they have enough clearance. Set them at .017" cold. Did you blow out and clean all the jets in the carburetor? You should be able to start the engine while holding your hand over the throat. Hal

Hal,
I didn't do the carb but let a carburator speciality shop in down town Atlanta where my father-in-law worked before he died do it. The old man who owns the place is over 80 but he and his wife still run the business. All the carbs he has done for me in the past have been jam up but this one may be different. I will run the test you mention as well as verify there is not a blockage in the gas line. It ran like it did pull some gasoline from the carb and then quit. The intake manifold was very rusty and I had to patch at least one hole. It may be the intake.
