Rod bearing wear on a 240U

I just pulled the pistons on my 240U to replace the rings and found a couple oil rings were broken. Inspection of the lower rod bearing shells showed that they all have copper colored areas on their surfaces. The top bearing shells surfaces are totally copper colored. There are wear lines along the surfaces as well, but no galling, deep scratches, or surface pitting. I also pulled a main bearing cap, and discovered the same copper colored surface. The bearing shells are factory originals: on the back is stamped "IH Std", with the part number.

Does this copper color indicate the bearings have worn thru the original surface, and are worn out? Never seen something like this before.

The copper is the bonding material between the bearing material and the steel backing. If you can see the copper the bearing is worn out.

In the 70's and early 80's there were many bearings made with nickel as the bonding material. These bearings are bad news since the nickel proved to be too hard and greatly increased crankshaft wear as the bearings became worn.

You need to have your crankshaft measured for wear. Take it to your local auto machine shop and have them measure it and they can determine if it needs to be ground undersize or just polished. They can furnish any bearings that are needed too. Hal
