1944 H with a dipstick

My H that I bought last year has a dipstick in the oil pan where the top petcock should be. I've never heard of one mentioned on this forum. Does anyone know if this was an option, or is it an aftermarket part. Looks to clean to be homemade. Thanks, you are a great bunch of people helping us newbies on our old Farmalls.

That was something sold by Tractor Supply Stores. Dad and I had one that we insalled on an M. Shore made it nice to check the oil. With the dipstick you knew exactly how much oil you had. Big improvement over the petcocks. Armand

I have both a Super H and Super M with some sort of aftermarket dipsticks in place of the oil level test cocks. Who made the dipsticks however is a mystery - they were on both tractors when I got "em.

Wouldn"t be surprised if there"s a few home-made dipsticks out there too...

Thanks for the replies. I was just curious. Never seen it mentioned before on this forum. This site is the best thing since canned beer.

I've got one that I removed from my 1940 M. Did a little experimenting while it was still installed and found it to be inaccurate. The dipstick indicated full when in reality the crankcase was one quart low.

The engine block on my 44 H has a boss on the lower right side of the block for an oil dipstick. It was never drilled. As I hated the double drain cock system of checking oil level, I drilled the boss, and fitted it with a 3/8" diam copper tube (about 4" long, maybe just a bit less). I then appropriated a dipstick from a Ford 8N and used it in the copper tube. I adjusted the "full" position of the dipstick by hammer tapping the tube further into the block. This has worked good for more than 20 years. Now I easily check the oil level every time I use this tractor.
