Something you don't see every day.

I was at an auction for an IH dealership that had closed a few years ago. They had a 3 section harrow/drag that was on a 2pt. fast hitch. Brand NEW!, it was on the original pallet, put on a shelf since it was new, they could not sell it. That ain't the best part, it brought $4000, thats right three zeros. Wow! I am sure it will be in a mueseum or on a parade tractor. Just something like that you don't see every day.

All I can say is 'Wow'. I wonder, though, if it really brought that or not. I know sometimes auctioneers have no bids and act like they really sold something and they really did not. Saw that first hand when my dad sold his dairy herd.

It sat in a back shed since it was new, they didn't sell it back then and it kind of got left there, either they forgot about it, or didn't think anyone wanted it I guess. They had a few other old pieces like that, brand new, there was also a two row rotary how, but I didn't see what it brought

No, it really brought that, I witnessed two guys bidding on it, I knew one guy that bid on it earlier, he kind of has a private mueseum or collection, he got out at about $2000 or so.

tj: But did you know the final two bidders, was it the auctioneer's cousin. I've been to many auctions, watched guys bidding against the auctioneer, even found myself bidding against hin couple of times. All you can do is back off, let him play his game with his relatives.

Well, I believe it. It doesn't sound like anyone else here is going to believe it though. Auctions are always a big conspiracy don't you know?!!! I don't know why folks always think someone is out to screw them. Sometimes games do get played at an auction, but very rarely around here anymore. I can't really see why this particular auctioneer would screw around with a the bidding on this harrow and then end up not selling it when he could have had over $2500 for. It sounds legit to me. There are tons of collectors that will converge on a dealer closeout auction. Some of them are very well off and could easily afford to pay this kind of money for an unusual item like that. Sounds like a neat sale. Wish I could of been there.

Hugh, that is why there are so many consignment auctions now days. It gives the auction company a chance to unload all those items that they got stuck with.

I can believe it, after all, if those dang Deeres can sell for big money, why cant something IH. An NOS peice on top of that, shoot, I beleive it!!!

Rusty: I've been to a coule of those, 4 major bidders, all scrap dealers. I agree that has some benefit, you buy the necessary part from the scrap dealer, and not have to lug the rest home.

I agree with that concept. I've passed up a few myself, simply because I didn't want to drag the whole thing home just for a few parts that MIGHT be useable.

I am sure it was a legit. auction, I have been to dozens of sales by this local auctioneer since I can remember. This is just that rare of an item. You have to find them before you can buy them. I have witnessed other auctioneers taking bids out of the air and things like that, but I think they would have been extremely happy with half that amount, so I doubt they tried raising the bidder. Some people just have that much money, I don't, I am just a young farmer trying to start out, work in town to make ends meet.

tj: And I'm just a contrary old retired farmer, too stubborn to pay that much. Besides those old flat blade spring tooth cultivators don't hold a candle to modern day S-tines.
