So what's the bottom line on replacing a 6v coil on our tractors? Where do we go, and what do we ask for?

Try The Brillman Company, John Brillman, 2328 Pepper Road, Mt. Jackson, Virginia 22842. www.brillman.com.
Talk to John. He can tell you what you need, how much, etc. If John doesn't have it, you don't need it. LOL

Not where I live, parts guy orders everything but filters, very little old equipment out here. I can get it the next day though. NAPA would likely have a coil in stock.

If you have any doubt, give your Case IH parts man the part number, if not in stock you will likely have it the next day. Or order from Carter and Gruenewald, www.external_link. Or if you like originality, pay the price and get an original looking one from OEM Tractor Parts, as Andy said.

Gordo, on the 6 volt coils ITS EASY. You go about anywhere and ask for a garden variety generic run of the mill 6 volt coil. THOSE ARENT THE HARD OR CONFUSING ONES. Its those 12"s and their use (with or without ballast,,,,,,, internally ballasted etc ect etc ,,,,,,,,,) that gets confusing to soooooooo many folks as evidenced by alllllllllll those posts below.........

If I had one laying in the shop and I had no idea nor was it labled as 6 or 12,,,,,,all you gotta do is stick an ohm meter on its lil + and - terminals,,,,,,,,if its around 1.2 to 2 ohms its a 6 volt but if its more like 2.5 to 3.5 its a 12. That way the points dont have to switch much over 4 amps they were designed to handle so they dont burn up prematurely. The points are the weak link and the reason we have to have the right coil and/or ballast or combination so they dont burn up too fast......

Thanks guys. I want to replace a couple.
BTW JohnT. I used to motocross and desert race motorcycles. I was pretty big into checking coils and condensors with multimeters. Found that new off the shelf items would not test to spec but would work. Old units would test to spec and not work. Go figure.
Finally decided , install, run and test was the only way. And then we found the components that would test OK, run OK, then under duress, lots of heat, were no good. Frustrated the H out of us.
Just no way to prep for a race and know you had a bulletproof system.
