BN Fan Clutch = Stuck Motor?

Hello all!

I might have the chance to add a few more tractors to the stable, even though its not what I need to do right now... Its a pair of Farmall BN's, at too good of a price to pass up.

Neither is running, and I believe one is for parts (havent seen it yet, scary I know), and the one that is in better shape is stuck. The current owner said something about an oil cooled fan clutch?

From what he tells me, he said that this clutch ran dry, and somehow water got in somewhere and now the engine wont turn.

Can anyone tell me about this fan clutch? Im almost 100% positive that a fan clutch sticking wont do anything to lock up an engine, but Im new to the smaller farmalls. (I have 2 H's and an M right now) Any tips?

If things are stuck, Im thinking of just charging up the battery, pulling the spark plugs and seeing if it will spin on its own. If not, adding a little bit of ATF and seeing if she will fire. Any thoughts on that process?

The fan hub bearing is lubricated with engine oil. It is not a clutch in any way. Even if the bearing ran dry it had nothing to do with water in the engine it is a fan bearing only.
 
There is no fan clutch on them. The fans were lubed by putting oil in a hole in the hub by removing the screw. The replacement part has bearings and need no lube added. Any way buy both of them as there were 15,000 or so built from 39-47 and more every day seem to be looking for one. They part out pretty good so i would get both and get them home and go from there.

Now Im just worried that he means the actual clutch has a problem, not the fan clutch.

Ill have to talk to the owner and see what he really means, or if he even knows.

Im sure there will be more questions to follow before too long.

If the engine being stuck doesn't worry you, a bad clutch shouldn't either. Either way there's a good chance you'll need to split the tractor and remove the clutch to get at the problem.

However, I sincerely doubt that the main clutch is the cause of the engine not running, either. There's no water back there for it to let in, and even if it wasn't working anymore, the engine would run with the transmission in neutral.

My suspicion is that, like most people, this person isn't particularly mechanical and is just trying to repeat what he heard the mechanic say.

If water got in the engine, it may be a cracked block or head.
 
if the fan did sieze on the shaft, it could be the motor wont turn over if the drive belt is tight. many years ago the bushing on my b burned up and froze/ the motor wouldnt turn over till the fan belt was loosened. steiners sells a new style fan for the b that has sealed bearings instead of the oil resevoir type fan.
 
I have an M that when we got it we believed the engine was locked up and all it was, was that the water pump is locked up. Runs real good other wise just needs to have the water pump replaced. I would loosen up the belt and set a battery in it and see if it will spin over before jumping off the deep end

Thanks for the ideas fellows. Ill loosen up that belt and see if she spins over. If so, that definitely makes my life easier!

I really appreciate the idea! From the looks of the pictures the owner has been hand cranking it, so a locked up bearing/water pump would definitely make it too hard to spin....

Does the BN have the same split pulley as the H has?
 
no, the b doesnt have the split pulley to adjust the belt tension. if you look on the engine side of the fan asem, you will see a nut on the end of a bolt in a slot. you loosen the nut and the whole fan slides to adjust tension.
