What is a "BD308?" Never heard of it.

With a 560 gasser, any engine in the C221-C301 series will fit with little trouble.

With a 560 diesel, any D282 or whatever the diesel was in the 460D will fit with little trouble.

A 560 gas can be converted to a diesel or vice versa by using the right combination of parts from a donor tractor.

Anything else will be a challenge with many custom parts required.

Keith: Tell us a bit more about the BD308 IH engine. My first inclination would British Diesel indicated by the BD. Then my next question would be, which British built IH did the BD308 fit? Is it 4 or 6 cylinder? My next thought is, there were IH tractors, same chassis as 560 except they had factory 3 point hitch same rear chassis as Super BMD or B-450, and built in Austrailia. Those were fitted with direct start, glow plug diesels. Given the fact these were built after the days of 560, and coupled with the fact Austrailia is part of the British Empire, very likely they used a British Diesel. Just a thought, I'm not certain I'm correct. If it was the engine of that Austrailian tractor, very likely it would bolt up to a 560. Be ready for some modifications though.

There are four other possible engines that will work with some modification, those being the 310, 312, 358 and 360.

Dunner: I hadn't thought of that one. Should have as we turned my 560 into a puller with a Black Diamond engine back in 78, after the diesel blew up. I don't doubt you, as any of those 6 cylinder IH truck engines will bolt up to a 560. Probably still looking at some modifications with carb and manifold plus radiator conections

I don't know for sure but the front of engine is where the fun starts. Some of the internal parts interchange but not very many. Timing gear area is quite different I believe . Never had 2 side by side to compare.

This is a Black Diamond 308 IH truck engine,I know I will hav't to change front engine cover, the 560 engine cover looks like it will interchange. The manifold looks like you could turn it over and make it work.Has anyone ever tried that? There maybe more to change I'am just trying to find out before I begin this job. Thanks Keith Y.

Keith: I perhaps stepped a bit out of line with my suggestion of putting the BD engine in my 560. I had blown the diesel in my 560, 2 rods through the block. Since it did not have 3 point hitch I decided not to fix the tractor.

It sat for a year then two guys made me a deal, I throw in the chassis and they make me a partner in a 560 puller. Now, I never saw any revenue from the project, however I never got any bills either. I guess I can feel lucky, share holder in a PULLER and no bills. I do know they used a BD engine. They offered to let me do the maiden pull, however I was too busy.

I believe the gaskets are the same between the two engines but the trucks use 5/16 bolts on the front cover while the tractors used 3/8 bolts. The biggest problem will probably be the governor since the timing gears are different. If I remember correctly the distance between the crankshaft and camshaft are different so that the gears cannot be interchanged.
