SMTA TA problem

Have the 54 SMTA all reassembled. Test drive and all was well except the TA. It seemed to take a second or two to engage, and then it would engage but seemed to be slipping a bit. Removed the top inspection plate. The clutch disc is at minimum 1/4 inch thick.Seems to engage well when I watched it , engine running, TA forward. T/a back there is about 80 thousandts clearance between plate and disc.
I went through the adjustment step by step twice and no change.
Is there some sort of load test, or say driving up to a stump or something to check the ramps, rollers, sprague?
I'm hoping it's an adjustment problem I can't wrap my arms around.

If it is slipping on the "low side" it is probably ramps and rollers. You said it was reassembled , did you work on TA? You can put it in a higher gear and hold the brakes to see if it will slip. Usually if it is ramp and roller problem it will start slipping in higher gears then work down, generally when you have a load on it. If it slips on the "high" side it is usually caused by the clutch. Clutch is about all you can see from the top.

No, I didn't work on the TA. I tested it when I bought it, about 5 minutes, and it seemed OK. It's slipping on the low side. What doesn't make sense here is the almost new condition of the clutch lining.

If it slips on the low side an all adjustments are correct it"s the ramp and rollers. I have replacement ramps with .010 oversized rollers if you need one. You may need the carrier turned also if it left tracks from the rollers. Feel free to email me. My address is changing on friday to [email protected]

The clutch drives the high side(direct). TA side is driven by the ramps & rollers. You have worn rollers and or ramps.
