What starters and generators will work on a Farmall A

I have a Farmall A I recently bought, (Ser #FAA 134037). I now have it running by starting it with the crank. The starter and generator are in very poor condition and I doubt they can be salvaged. On the starter, the back plate is broken in half so I doubt it can be repaired. The generator is in pieces and the springs for the brushes are broken. Can anyone tell me what starters and generators (6 volt) are interchangeable with a Farmall A? Can I use a starter for a B, C, H, or M and likewise can I use a generator from any of them? Thanks for your help, Jerry.

Jerry, The 'A; 'B', and 'C' do use the same starter. Only item different to check, make sure how the starter-rod hooks up., whether pull or push to start. I am not sure about the 'H' or 'M' starter to the 'A'. Good Luck Jerry, Ed-n-Tex

Jerry - FWIW the original rear end cover (die cast zinc) broke into several pieces on the starter on my Super M. My friendly local starter/alternator replaced the busted part with a stamped steel (stronger!) part and completely rebuilt the starter for under $100. It now works better than new.

As Andy mentions the same basic 6 volt Delco generator is used on the A, B, C, H and M. With a different pulleys it's also found on many JD, Oliver, A-C, Minnie-Mo, etc. tractors of that era.

Jerry: Any starter from a A, B, C, SA, SC, 100, 200, 130, 230, 140 or 240 will bolt up and work well. There may be others, that is just a list of the one's I'm certain of.

The starter switch on top of starter for A and B will be the same. Starter switch for the others is different. Late 140 and 240 also use a solinoide. You could either change to A type starter switch or use the later systems.

The starters on my Super M, M and early A will and have been interchaged. I have solenoid on A and not the original switch on starter.

If you are restoring and want it orogonal you need the starter for the A or B as the sw uses a pushrod to enguage. The ones for a C and later have the sw mounted at the rear and use a pull rod. You can get rebuilt ones from www.nnalert.com they will also have the regulator for the generator.
