help!!! I have a adjustable wide front end 1948 Farmall H that I am trying to remove the radiator for replacement. I can not find a way to get to the two hold down studs on the bottom of the radiator. My manual states that i should
"remove the dust cover on the front of the frame rails". I do not see a dust cover to remove. Surely you are not required to disassemble the entire front axle and steering mech. to get to these radiator bolts.

you prolly dont have the dust cover on the tractor. its a piece of tin a little under a foot square, it was there to keep mud from getting thrown up into the lower bolster.not sure if you have an i-h wide front or an aftermarket on your h, but there are two holes in the bottom of the lower bolsterjust below the rad mounting studs that you can get a deep socket up on the hold down nuts. first tho....spray the studs and nuts up good with pb blaster penetrating oil and let em soak up. there may be a cotter pin and castle nut with a spring holding the rad down, unless someone was in there before. there is also a hole in the lower bolster just below the crank start unit, , not a lot of room, but it is possible to get a box end rachet up in there to get the nuts off. at the very worst, you need to jack up the front of the tractor, block it good, then loosen and lower the wide front mount brackets on the bolster steering shaft to get to the studs.
 
I think glennster is right on. I've taken the radiator of my H (narrow front) a couple times. I always accessed those bolts through a hole in the bottom of the iron block/framework the radiator sits on. Other than taking out the steering shaft and dealing with all that antifreeze, it really wasn't too bad of a job at all (on my narrow front tractor). Good luck!
 
If you have an original IH wide front and it is "set back" using the large, flat iron plate, you will probably have to take that all off to access the bolts from below. If your wide front was bolted on in the forward position, you could probably access it as described in the manual.

If my old memory serves me right, that whole front end has to come down outta there on the H.

Actually, it's not too darned bad. Use a floor jack under the front end and just roll 'er forward. After the plate is off you can then get to the radiator bolt holes.

The dust plate you mentioned is a tin plate bolted under the radiator, most of these have been removed, so you most likely don't have this plate. You can get at those nuts with a 5/8" wrench, but be sure to remove the cotter pins from the castle nuts first. They are a pain to get at, but it can be done. My Dad's 1944 H has a IH wide front and the radiator on it can be removed without taking off the front end. If you are having problems posting or reading posts, email Chris at [email protected]

I have a Schwartz wide front on my H and have decided that it is both easier and quicker to remove it to remove the radiator. It is possible to do it without, but working the cramps out of my hand makes it longer.

Eastsider is correct. My wide front end uses the heavy iron plate and unfortunately it is bolted in the rear position (blocking the rad bolts). It appears this type of wide front does not use the dust cover and covers everything with the heavy iron plate. No access holes. What a great design. Thanks to all for the input
 
Seems like a bad design but if you took this plate off and installed your WF in the forward position, you would notice a HUGE difference in maneuverability and usefulness. The set back plate is great even if it makes things less accessibloe. When I put one on my M, I deleted and plugged the radiator drain.
 

If it's a working tractor, they handle much better with the set-back wide front. The problem is they look really good with that wide front, out front!
