3588 No First Gear

I have a 3588 with no 1st gear It has 2nd 3rd and fourth but there is no 1st You just hear a litte clink sound of metal touching together with no resistance or grinding Does anyone know what could of happened or if you can fix it from the top plate in the transmission Thanks

Most likely the nut came off of the speed transmission countershaft. This allows the shaft to move forward and first gear to come off the splines of the shaft. It requires a double split to repair it

is that common and what are the two splits and so it probably has nothing to do with the shifting arm and what do you think the ping sound is when you try first gear. Thanks

Two splits means the tractor needs to be taken apart (split) in two places to make the repair. Usually between the transmission and differential, and between the trans and the torque tube. Probable equipment needed include splitting stands, floor jacks, and blocking, and a high capacity floor crane. The repair manual. JimN
