i bought a old 3 position switch, what kind of voltage reg and where to get one? i dont know much about this.. also is the old box (already forgot what its called, mounted on the generator) worth anything, or just toss it? thanks again!

Don't throw it away, I'm sure someone could use it. a 3 Position switch ( Off - Dim - Bright) are used on the later models with a Voltage regulator, the 4 position switch (Low Charge - High Charge - Dim Lights - Bright Lights) is used on tractors with a cut-out on the generator. Is it NOS in a IH box??

NAPA, this site, And many other sources can provide a positive ground B circuit regulator with three or 4 terminals. (the L terminal can be used to power the light/accessory demands, but is not much different than hooking directly to the Load side of the amp meter) The three terminal regulator has a Bat terminal (to the load side of amp gauge with #10 wire, An ARM or GEN terminal which goes to the Arm terminal on the generator (big terminal), and a Field or F terminal which attaches to the F terminal on the Gen (small terminal) Be sure the new VR has a good ground to the tractor, and that the Gen does as well. If you are using a 3 brush generator, it should have the third brush adjusted as far as it will go toward the fixed brush. JimN

Yo Jim, far as I know it was only Fords that used a B charging system, while most all others including Deere n IHC n Oliver n AC n MM used the A. As I know youre well aware the A system controls the charge rate by regulating the gennys field ground resistance while the B system does it on the voltage input to the Field and the Fields are already grounded on their output. To make an A system full charge you would dead ground the gennys FLD post but to full charge a B system you would apply full voltage to the gennys F terminal.........

If youre like me I get things like A or B or B or A mixed up but I learned this years ago when I tried to use a Ford VR on an IHC or Deere (I forget) and after I let the smoke out I taked to an old timer at the genny shop who yelled at me YOU CANT USE A FORD VR EXCEPT N FOR FORDS LOL

I have no idea which Fords used the B system, we would have to venture over to the Ford boards to learn that

Yall take care n keep warm now
