just purchase a M diesel, runs great on gas but when i switch to diesel, it smokes white real bad and dies in a few seconds. any ideas what is wrong, thanks

The starting valves may be leaking. Remove the spark plugs and crank the engine over while it is in the diesel cycle and see if there is compression coming out of the spark plug holes.

It must be operated at least 1.5 to 2 minutes on gas before switching. It is necessary to have solid Diesel compression to make it ignite, so if it will not, it may be any factor reducing compression, as Chuck's repair indicates, it could be misadjusted starting valves, or stuck starting valves, or bad/stuck rings or bad main valve adjustment (less likely). If it does pump air out the spark plug holes on diesel mode, after checking full motion of the linkages to the head, pull the Valve cover and see if the third valves are sticking open. Tapping them with a plastic hammer, squirting with PB Blaster, and repeated tapping may free them W/O head removal. JimN

Check your fuel level. Diesels have a short stem in the bottom of the fuel tank to keep the injection pump from sucking in any sediment. You can put a stick or something down in the tank but its going to take at least an inch or so of fuel to get her running. It got me one time!
