Time to get a newer tractor--advice?

I farm 160 acres (corn, soybeans) which I have been doing with an M for the past 30 years. However I have finally decided I need a little larger tractor (50-70 hp) with such things as Live Hydraulics and Live PTO and also 3 point hitch.

So how is the best way to go about getting a tractor like this? I am thinking some of the things I should do are:

Talk to local auctioneers and have them keep an eye out and let me know of any tractors

Check out farm sales in the local paper (I get the Midwest Messenger, if any out there are familiar with this paper).

Talk to local implement dealers

I have talked a couple of times to my local Case-IH dealer, and it has been kind of a disappointment. I cannot seem to get them to help me. It seems like unless you are coming in there to buy something that is at least $100,000 they don't want to have much to do with you!

andy's right, but id also keep an eye on the photo ads here as well as post a message in the ih farmall forum, the problem at auctions is that more often than not, you either buy a problem tractor, one that nobody knows anything about,or wind up paying too much for what it is, some of the guys on the ih forum have some good stuff occasionaly for sale at a decent price

nevermind me, i was looking at the tractor talk forum, and didnt remember i WAS on the ih page, had the screen rolled up to the top, and its a cold monday here and my brain isnt working good also have C,R,S. syndrom

From time to time I see a few tractors listed for sale locally that are in the 50 to 70 HP range. Some of these are on dealers lots, most of them are for sale by the owner. How far do you want to drive?

Where are ya located?

I could let this one go. Don't use it enough around here and it really needs to be working instead of just sitting around.

Was just about to add a 656, 686, or 784 to the choices and then I see Allan's beautiful 686 with a round bailer no less. If I were in NE, I'd sure snap it up for no other reason than it's looks. I recently flew to Omaha NE to buy a truck (full size Ford F150, extended cab, V8, 2WD - scarser than hens teeth)- had I known about the possibility of something like this coming up for sale, I might have extended by trip.

Been thinking about selling that tractor and baler for a couple of years now.

This season, I ran across roughly 20 acres with the pair and dug half a dozen post holes with the tractor. Otherwise, they have just sat.

Both have been rebuilt from the ground up, are just like new and need to be working for somebody. Just too darned small for my needs anymore.

I live in the Leigh-Creston area of Platte County NE (right between Norfolk and Columbus). Would consider something that wouldn't be "too" far from where I live maybe 100 miles?

Nice rig you got there Allan, not surprising, all your tractors look good. How did things turn out after the snowstorm? Hope the livestock made it.
