The prior owner copnverted my M to a 12 volt. I burned out the starter. Is there any way to convert the starter to a 12v? I have not seen a 12 volt, 2 bolt starter available for an M, but I know a lot of other guys have converted their M"s to 12v.

Thanks.

I know it's not technically correct but I have never changed a starter yet. Just run the 6V starter. My uncle has a JD AR that I converted 18 years ago and the starter is still going strong.

I've had a 6 volt starter on my M with a 12 volt system for 20 years with no problems, just don't crank on it for a long time.

I agree with the other guys here. If you have to crank the 6V starter long enough to burn it up when you convert to 12V, you've got other problems that deserve attention...points, plugs, coil, carburetion, or bad bushings causing binding in the starter itself. But most of the 12V conversions I've seen have had zero problems with the starter.

The starter would've burned out in roughly the same amount of time on 6V too. Its days were numbered.

Just replace it with a stock rebuilt starter, nothing special. If you have to crank the engine a lot to get it started, then the tractor needs a tune-up.

em, A starter repair shop (if theres any left near you) could likely do a conversion in the event you CAN NOT find any 12 volt with the right mount. I've never had any 6 volt starters go bad when I left them following conversion to 12 volts, however. It can be a bit tough on the mechanical starter drive due to the higher kick in torque, but it looks to me like have yours rebuit and converetd by a repair shop or (if thats possible) or else just get a good 6 volt which should last a longgggggggg time.

I have had late 140 starter on M for years (at least that is what I was told it is) without a problem and I think it is 12 volt. As others have said 6 volt will work fine.

Thanks guys. The tractor uisually pops off just fine without having to keep cranking it. The auto electronics guy can rebuild it for $55, I'll see if it is even worh to have it converted to a 12v --seems like not the thing to do.
