Farmall Super M Battery Group

What size (group) battery goes in a Super M?

This must be top secrete info since I can't for the life of me find it on the 'net.

I think I've got a group 1 battery in it right now bouncing around (maybe the previous owner thought it would grow and eventually fill the extra space. ).

(quoted from post at 14:23:44 11/16/08) Group 2 for under the tank and group 3 for under the seat.

Well, I guess that makes perfect sense.

The parts store guys kind of look at me funny when I start talking 6 volt batteries.

If this is a tractor that will be used in cold weather now is a good time to upgrade to a 12 volt battery (will also work better than 6 volts in hot weather also). Than measure the battery case and get the biggest battery that will fit in the case. No wonder parts people look at you funny when you ask about 6 volts as this is the 21st. century!! In case you have not guessed already I am constantly upgrading to get the most use out of my old tractors. There is no reason these old tractors cannot become part of the 21st. century. Armand

TractormanNC:

So group 3, not group 2? This is an under the tank setup, the box that slides out on a rail.

armand tatro:

I understand what you are saying but I've got two others that start just fine on 6 volt. I kind of feel like if it's not broke, don't fix it.

Group 3 is a tight fit in the under tank box but it is what is supposed to be in there. Group 2 won't fill up the box.

If it is a SM with a good tight engine, it takes a group 3 to spin it good. Dad had a M with fire crater pistons and a SM head and a Group 2 battery would not crank it lots of times.
