The 200 I am working on did not have the name plate so I was at an end trying to find the serial number. I know that the A's and B's had a stamped on number on the engin block behind the distributor or mag. that originally matched the serial number for the unit. My 200 also has a stamped on number that is in exact same place as the number on my "B" and it is in the range of production numbers for 200's built in 1956. It is not a cast in number. Did IH continue to stamp the unit serial numbers on the engin blocks up thruough the 200 series?
 
Look on the engine block for a flat machined surface just below No1 sparkplug for the SN. It may be covered with coats of paint and greas and dirt. See if your number matches these years. These are starting serial numbers for each year. Hal

LMack, that is just the engine serial number, not the unit serial number. That, unfortunately, is lost forever. The engine number will be close, but not the same.

Look on the castings for codes in the format 11-22-X. The numbers are the month and day the casting was made, and the letter the year. 1956 would be B. 1955 is A.
 
LMack, Much has been discussed recently about tractor serial numbers verses block serial numbers. The numbers should match except for two major issues. IH was manufacturing and installing engines in machines such as hay swathers and combines in addition to tractors. This resulted in engine numbers going up at a faster rate than the tractor serial numbers. The other thing is that most all tractors with the C123 engine (Farmall 200, and 230)started their tractor serial number with 501 but kept adding numbers to the block number.

For what its worth, I have a 1956 Farmall 200 with a tractor serial number of 11,318 and a engine serial number of 22710.

In addition, I have a 1957 Farmall 230 with a tractor serial number of 3076 and a engine serial number of 46025.
