300U starter solenoid

I fried my solenoid and got a replacement from Case. Problem is the old one is a 3 post. New one is a 4 post. My old solenoid had a copper bracket that went from the bottom post over to a post on the starter. Of course it is too small to work on the new one. So 2 questions. First what can I replace that strap with? Secondly. the small wire post, do I attach it to the upper or lower small post on the new solenoid? Thanks much

A copper bracket with two holes made to adapt the new relay to the old connector might help if you can't bend the old one enough to get there.
There will be an S on one little terminal, and an I on the other. The S attaches to the starter button. The I can be left unused. If you were converted to 12 volts, and if you also had a external ballast resistor on the input to the coil, you would attach the I terminal to the coil side of the ballast resistor. This will bypass the resistor when starting making it have hotter spark on startup. JimN

Thanks! that does help. Unfortunately the copper bracket way too short. Wondering, the old solenoid is clearly marked 6v. However at some point this tractor was updated to 12v. I'm wondering if the bracket was just replaced with a wire? Or is there a chance I have the wrong solenoid?? Unfortunately Case is closed so I can't call. Thanks again for your response!

A bracket can be made out of a heavy strip of copper (cut from a piece of copper pipe, or flattened 3/8" or 1/2" copper tubing. The copper part is important in that it needs to carry hundreds of amps. (a short O gauge cable made just long enough to loop once, and attach is OK also.
The metal bracket on the Relay must be grounded to the starter frame to make it work. The 12 v relay will be fine. Hooking it's I terminal up to the ballast resistor is a good idea if you have one. JimN

Thanks! I hadn't thought of using copper pipe. That is exactly what I will do. Thanks again!!! You've been a great help!!!
