cracked manifold on m

Donald: The welding shop I talked to stated that if it is a rusted hole to repair, they would cover it with a mild steel patch and braze it. Didn't ask about cracked manifolds. The welder assured me that patching was permanent fix.

Believe it or not, Mighty Putty is working for us on a large hole in the Super C manifold. I cleaned up around the hole with a wire wheel, and we kneaded up an entire tube of the stuff and made a patch.

It probably won't hold up to a lot of rough handling or heavy work, but it's saving us the $150 on a new manifold as long as the tractor is a shed queen.

I've never had a problem with brazing on manifolds. However I now make a patch from 2mm mild steel and gasweld it (oxy/acetelene) using a low a pressure as possible to minimise the heat spread. I use cast iron rods and a high silicone flux. If I'm out of cast rods I use old piston rings, if you do this they get very hot very quick and they are murder to grind. If possible bolt the manifold in place on an old cylinder head so that it doesn't warp. MTF

If it's just a hole drill and tap that spot for a pipe plug.

"Brazing will not melt off the manifold", the melting point of your alumnium pistons is lower then that of brazing rod.

To braze a crack you first drill a small hole at the end of the crack to stop it from spreading.

The best way to do this is to then put the manifold in a oven and bring the hole piece up to the same temp, then braze or weld it.

Any good welding shop will do this. If you don't want to put it in the kitchen oven then warm the hole piece with a rose bud nice and slow.

Brazing will last a long time.

For MN Scott: The M I am presently working on was used for years to rip and plow Montana sod, pull a baler, feed cattle, etc-- all with a brazed manifold! Finally the cast iron rusted through. At least, brazing worked on one manifold.

Bert,

Brazing is a good repair, but if you want it to

look better and look like it wasn't repaired ,

o/a and cast iron rod with flux is a much better

repair. I do quite a few manifold repairs and

all with o/a weld.

Below is one that is under way ,it's somewhat

of a disaster , but repairable. Click the link

and there are more pict's of it .

bathtub works well, cut the bad metal out and

replace with bathtub .
