H grill mounting

The parts book list using a screw to attach the grill on the H.
Is it really a screw or a hex head bolt?
Seems to me when I took it apart, there were bolts holding it on.

49750-up were bolts, 501-49749 were dzus (sp?) fasteners. IH sometimes did not call things what they actually are.

Thanks CNKS, I am getting closer to the final stages of getting this H done.
Filled up the tranny last night with $75 of gear oil, ouch ; )
Still have a few pieces to get back together and parts ordered, but it is starting to take shape.

It does get confusing. What most of us think of as a "screw" would be either a wood screw or a sheet metal screw. In the technical world, A hex head "bolt" is actually a "cap screw", so what your manual is calling a "screw" is actually a "cap screw", most commonly referred to as a "bolt".

And for the record, My 1940 H uses those "dzus" fasteners.

Yeah Rusty, most of the part descriptions in the book will say cap screw and give the size of the fastener. This one threw me off since it just said screw in the parts listing.

I might also mention that the non-pressurized radiators used the "dzus", and the pressurized radiators use the bolts.

I have a 41 H with bolts and non-pressurized radiator. Serial break for pressurized was 115030 or mid-late 1942. Serial break for Dzus was 49750. 52386 was last serial in 1940, so most 1940's had dzus fasteners. I would guess that the fasteners could be changed. Radiator could be changed, also, leading to differences of opinion on this forum. If I ever get to "restoring" my 41 H (needs everything) it will likely end up with a pressurized radiator, correct or not.

Speaking of radiators

I did end up ordering the mounting kit from OEM, not worth the money in my opinion. The studs did not have the holes for the cotter key which I think they should have for that kind of money.

I went to NAPA and they had the studs. Also TSC has them in their specialty fastener cabinet.

The rubber pads are way to thick, the steering shaft will not go through with much clearance. Picked up some large rubber washers at the local ACE hardware store that worked better.

Need to look for the springs, but they should not be to hard to find.

I found some 5/16 fine thread chrome bolts at a local hardware store. Menard's also has them. I used them over a black fibre washer so I don't chip the paint when installing/removintg the grill.

I also found that the pads were too thick for the radiator. I just haven't gotten around to tearing it down again so I can shave some of the thickness away, or get new pads. Seems like a waste.
