M idling poorly--third post.

It has been suggested that the float level may be set too high and the tractor is running too rich. It is now at 1 5/16 inches. How much should I lower it? Thanks

Without having the exact specs in front of me, if you tip the carb upside down, and the float appears parallel with the casting, then the float is set close enough.

Don't mess with it until the gasket gets replaced. If it is even close, the adjusters can even it out. It will never be smooth until the air leak is repaired. I'm a Dr. as well (Technology Education) and we need to treat the disease, not the symptom.

Thanks Gentlemen: Had not planned on any changes until the new gasket is installed. Dr. Jim--thanks for reminding me of the "big picture". Should have remembered that you can't treat until you have a diagnosis!

1 5/16 is the correct spec -- carb upright, distance is from the bottom of the float to the TOP of the gasket. You can get rid of any rich setting by turning the main needle in until it runs rough, then out until smooth plus maybe 1/4 turn. This is done in conjuction with adjusting for a smooth low idle speed. Do the main jet at WOT with the engine warm after you fix your leak.

Put a timing light on it. If the distributor bushing gets loose, the shaft wobbles around and messes with the timing.
