M idles poorly revisited

Thanks to all that responded. To answer some of the recent tips. The carburetor shafts were all nice and tight-no play, Carburetor rebuilt with a kit from RustyFarmall and all passages checked and open, air intake pipe to carburetor removed for free flow, set the float level at exactly the recommended level. This morning I removed the hood and cleaned thoroughly around the manifold. Following Mike French's tip I started the engine and sprayed carburetor cleaner aroung the manifold and it smoothed right out! Simple solution-- the manifold was loose--tightened the nuts and idling improved greatly. Will buy a new gasket and I think the problem will be solved. Again--thanks for all the helpful tips. PS--readjusted the governor also.

Where was that adjustment screw located? It sounds like you opened the power or gas screw instead of the idle screw. That would make sense with a air leak by the gasket, you would need more gas then.

RJ-Wi: The screw I adjusted was the upper screw at the base of the throat of the carburetor as per the diagram sent with the rebuild kit. The one with the spring on it. Thanks.
