gear ratios

I have seen some interesting home brews where tractors have 4 wheel drive. If a guy wanted to build one like out of a farmall h for example, could you drive it off pto with modification running to a transfer case to match transmission ratios through all gears? any thoughts or opinions? thanks a bunch,

Well the common way it is done to get all the gear ranges is to have the driving gear mesh with the forth and fifth slider gear. Than once that power is harnessed get it out through the opening where the belt pulley mounts. From there large chains are usually used to drive a shaft running to the front axle. Also youd have to caluclate all you gear and chain ratios to be sure you get corresponding ratios between the front and rear wheels.

Hope this helps

Here's what Jordan is talking about.

Power has to come off one of the main shaft sliding gears or somewhere else after that. The driven gear has to be three times the width (or slightly greater) to handle the lateral movement of the sliding gear. This Elwood unit is on a 660 and will interchange with M's thru 560. It will not fit smaller framed tractors from IH.

Power cannot come off the belt pulley, PTO, idler shaft, countershaft, constant mesh gears, or clutch/flywheel unless you are willing to accept only one 4x4 speed.

I am currently thinking about making a "hydro-creeper" for a WD-9. It will take its power from the 1st/Rev sliding gear. Rather than place a hydraulic motor to be driven off that gear, I could install a pump. Power from that pump could go to a motor driving the pinion of a front live axle or separate wheel motors.
