HYDRAULICS ON H DON'T WORK

I'm having a problem with my hydraulics not working on my Farmall H. I think I put in the wrong fluid, too heavy. But, I'm not really sure that is the problem. How do I basically service the unit, take it apart. I know nothing about hydraulics, but am a decent mechanic generally. Any simple steps for me to check things out?

Just in case: First, the hydraulcs won't work with the clutch pedal pushed in. They are driven off the transmission. Put the tractor in neutral and take your foot off the clutch pedal.

Did the hydraulics ever work? Unless you put in 140W gear oil, you should get at least SOMETHING out of the system even if you used the "wrong oil."

What oil did you use? Either SAE30 non-detergent engine oil, or Hytran, or Hytran-equivalent is the "right oil."

Good advice from MK, but assuming you do have to get into the pump, it"s haevy greasy work but not hard. They really are rugged units and IH still supports most parts - but they"re not cheap. I highly recommend the lift-all blue ribbon service manual, it tells you all you need to know. I just rebuilt the pump on my "50 M and like you had never been inside a hydraulic pump before. Getting the coupler off the shaft was the hardest part - heavy vice, pipe wrench and a cheater bar. After that pops free it"s easy.

Yes the Hudraulics worked fine until last year. I
believe for some stupid reason I put 90w gear oil
in it. I haven't yet drained it. All I seem to
get is a slow ooze out ihe hose. I took the hose
off and on, figuring it was the connection
perhaps, but no dice. I use the hydraulic for a
sickle cutter attachment, mainly. I feel it is
something simple. Should I drain it and run
kerosene through it then fill it with proper
hydraulic oil? Can't hurt I guess.

Drain gear lube, re-fill with SAE 30 or HyTran or other hydraulic oil and use it.

Don't bother taking it out and/or apart for something so simple. Just drain and re-fill.

I agree with the first-try-drain-and-refill approach. I use hytrans in my H but the 30W non-detergent oil will work. I had to rebuild my pump a few years ago - I just replaced the gaskets, balls and springs and didn't find the cost all that high. I would go for the service manual as recommended above. If your state does inter-library loans from other states, I believe there's a copy available at the University of Louisianna.
