clutching issues on H

A strange problem started on my "41 H last week. I ran into a situation where sometimes the clutch would apparently not disengage completely. It would usually happen at low speeds - as I would be shifting into gear, I"d feel the gears grinding. At higher speeds, it apparently isn"t a problem.

Do I need a new clutch? The clutch rod adjustment is almost at the end of the threads

Make sure you lubricate the pilot bearing in the center of the crank shaft. Lining up a pulley mark that is not the timing mark, with the timing pointer will allow access to the zerk fitting in a access hole under the clutch housing. Ypur manual will explain. If your trans mission is very low on fluid (80-90 gear oil) it will also contribute to the issue, or if the gear oil was replaced with Hytran. JimN

Sounds like it's worn out to me. You can replace the clutch and pressure plate through the bottom of the torque tube after removing the liftall belly pump and reservoir. Some people will tell you that you need to split it and resurface the flywheel, which I suppose would be worthwhile if you were going to work the blank out of that tractor, but for just playing around...

The hardest thing about removing the clutch is getting the shaft out. There's a lot of wiggling and twisting because the fit is very tight, and it has to be just so to come out. But, you don't need to tear the tractor completely apart to do the work, which is a big plus.

thanks - I've already been into this area when I bought the tractor as the farmer I purchased it from had the clutch horribly out of adjustment.

I agree about the flywheel refacing - I'll wait until I do the ground up restoration

the rest of the advice is all good - thanks

If you mean that with tractor idling with clutch out and then you get a little grind when you depress clutch and shift into gear that is a common problem. One easy cure (assuming you have working belly pump) is to pull out lift all lever when you depress clutch and wait couple of seconds and pump will load clutch enough to cause it to release.
