I recently became the owner of a 1950 Farmall H, been having alot of fun fixing up my first tractor. The steering is loose, about a half revolution worth. Is this adjustable? Thanks Much

its not adjustable per se. you will need to find out whats loose. take the hood and grille off the tractor, then start at the steering wheel and work dow,. check the u-joint by the gauges, see if its tight. then pull the cover off the top of the steering bolster and watch the worm and sector gear as you turn the wheel. more than likely there is where your slop will be. if the sector gear is a full circle gear (the gear connected to the bolster, not the steering wheel shaft) you can remove it and turn it 180 degrees. that will tighten the steering up some. other areas are the bearing at the end of the steering shaft( under the pipe plug cap at the top of the bolster) the bolster bushings could be worn, or the lower bolster bearing. if you need to rebuild the bolster, carter and gruenenwald sels the whole kit, bushings, bearings and seals for about 160 dollars.

Well, before you go inside the steering, you want to make sure you tighten everything outside the steering. Start at the lug nuts, and work towards the center, and tighten everything on the rods, arms, and the shaft that goes into the box. Also make sure the steering wheel itself is tight. On my 1966 140, I went from one-third turn to just a few inches. You will be surprised how stuff that looks and feels tight, really isn't, and how a few slightly loose items multiply in their effect along the mechanical chain. Someone will be along to tell you what you can adjust on an H, with which I am unfamiliar. Good luck and welcome!

Check the steering gear and worm gear and make sure they are not worn. Remove the steering gear and check the splines on the gear and the steering shaft and make sure they are in good condition.

I just finished restoring an h. Needed to replace the gear and shaft. The gear had wobbled out the splines on the shaft so a new one would not seat correctly. bates corp has parts kinda pricey but they have them.
