504 International, Hub freezing up

Hi all and thanks for any advies here.... I have a 504 international that last winter the right and only right rear tire/hub would freese up when the temp fell below 32. I could usually put it in gear and the hub/tire/axel would give a loud "pop/crack" sound and I could drive the tractor. I'm sure this is not good, well of course there was no reason to work on it this summer and I kind of forgot about it until now.

What is causing this? I assume water somewhere, but where do I need to look, what need to be changed or repaired.... Any Idead would be appreciated.

I might loosen the drain plug/plugs very carefully to see if water has settled to the bottom and is freezing when cold. This works if you have not driven it for awhile so the water goes to bottom.

Dude it sounds like you have water trapped in a bearing or the brake housing. If your IH 504 is like my Farmall 504 the brake disks are directly tied to the pinion shaft. If you have moisture/water in the housing/cover that would definatly cause one side to "lock up". I find this more likely than an axle bearing. Pull the RH brake cover and inspect. If water has been there, clean it all up good and silicone the cover when reinstalling. Also make sure it has the rod boot installed as well as in good repair. Those little boots cause me a lot of grief before I replaced mine. Good luck.
