Have 52 Super M. I think it has a M motor in it. The S/N number is FBKM 190412 and and a casting date of 6-24-S. Also stamped 6722-DJ. The head is marked inside the valve cover 8060-DC with 1-X above it. My first concern,I pulled the rocker arm assembly to check the torque on the head. I also pulled the push rods to inspect. When I pulled one I guess I lifted to quick and pulled the tappet valve out of it"s hole. Can I just pull the side plate to reinstall? Second question is the breather tube is missing. Should it be reinstalled? Would this explain the white scum on the top of the inside of the valve cover? The oil in the engine does not show any signs of anti freeze or head leaking.

pull the side cover and you can access the tappets. i am suprised that the tappet came out. there should be a metal bar that is bolted in there to keep the tappets from falling out. could be somebody was in there before and left the bar out. the wite residue is prolly just moisture, usually from short periods of running without getting the engine good and hot.there should be a tube running to the air cleaner, if its missing, i'd replace it.

That is the engine serial, not the chassis serial, they don't match. The number on the clutch housing has an FBK prefix (no M) if an M, or an SM prefix if a Super M.

The FBKM 1900412 is stamped on the block above the distributor. The plate rivited to the bell houseing is stamped SM F8055J. I should have been more specific

Pulled the cover and you were right. Some one in the past never put the plate back in. Dropped the tappet back in, cleaned every thing and sealed it up. The bad news now is took the lifter assembly apart to clean and found the valveshaft is bent and scored. Any ideas for a replacement?

A used one is probably easier to do than having one made. Steel Wheel Ranch or a Salvage yard is probable. JimN

Thanks for all the help. It's been just amazing, every thing I open up on this tractor I find something bad or broken. Shoulden't complain, that what I bought it for.

mike, i would replace that retaining bar while you have the cover off, that way the lifter wont pop out again if you need to work on the pushrods. if you cant find one, shoot me an e mail, i have an m and a super m apart at the shop, i can measure the bracket for you and you can make one out of flat stock. glenn
