300 Starting Question

My Farmall 300 sits quite a bit in between uses. My question is, it is extremely hard to start after sitting for more than a week. Cranks great but will not fire. When I pull it, it fires right up. Yesterday, I only cranked it a little then went right to pulling it. Is it just flooding out by sitting? Any suggestions? I haven't been shutting off the fuel supply while it sits. Is it as simple as that? Any help is appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Could well be caused by you not shutting off the gas. If it is that also means you have a good chance that you have gas in your oil and if so that will cause you major problems down the road. If I where you I would shut off the gas and see if that helps or hurts your problem

Cranking great does not diagnose the spark. Sometimes a set of weak dirty points, a weak coil or condenser will require full volts to make fire. Pulling it does that.
Is it still 6v. ?
If so are the battery cables O ga. or OO ga wires? If not they should be to provide full amps to the starter/ignition.
if 12v it needs at least 2ga wire in the bat cables.
Old is dead on with the fuel shut off (always do it even for a half hour shutoff). JimN

If that engine is getting weak and the compression is low because of worn rings or leaking valves, pulling it will usually get it to start quicker because the engine turns over faster than if you used the starter. The faster that engine turns over, the greater the chance of building up enough compression to get it to start. Another thing, which might be less expensive to fix, is to make sure the battery is fully charged. A weak battery COULD have enough power to turn the engine over, but not enough power to energize the coil and ignition system. Poor electrical connections can also cause the same thing.

Shut off the fuel supply when not in use, and use no or very little choke when starting. Otherwise as the others say, you don't have enough current to make it fire. If your ignition is in good shape, it is likely flooded.

I have had similar problems with my 300. I do shut off the gas after I am done using it. The engine turned over fine, but I never got a good fire. Was never sure whether or not to choke. I never tried pulling it. I did finally buy a cheap trickle charger. That seemed to make a big difference. You might try that. I got one at Harbor Freight for about $5. Seems to work great.

I had the same problem with my 300U I switched over to a good hot mag and my Staring problems were over particularly in wet weather
